In addition, the military purifier comes with a waterproof stuff sack manufactured by the Lighthouse of the Blind. The sack is attachable by a clip to standard military gear. The MSR MIOX Purifier is a handheld water treatment device ideal for campers, backpackers, travelers, the military, and first responders. It is also the perfect household item for any individual or family preparing for disaster such as a hurricane, earthquake, flood, epidemic like the avian flu, or even a terrorist attack.
The purifier weighs only 3.5 ounces (99 grams) and is 7 inches (18 cm) long. The device has passed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Guide Standard and Protocol for Microbiological Purifiers, inactivating viruses, bacteria, and the protozoan cysts Giardia and Cryptosporidium in both clean and dirty waters. No pumping is required.
The MSR MIOX Purifier provides a lifelong supply of water treatment, with replacement of salt and batteries after approximately 200 liters of treatment. Built-in lights indicate when salt and battery replacement is required. Treatable quantities include ½ liter, 1 liter, 2 liters, and 4 liters (~1 gallon) at a time. There is no shelf life associated with either the purifier or the salt, and the shelf life of the batteries ranges from 7 to 10 years.
MIOX Corporation has licensed the purifier to Cascade Designs Inc., owner of the Mountain Safety Research brand. The purifier comes in both a red version [Consumer Spec Sheet] and a tan version [Military Spec Sheet].
