What is Mixed Oxidant Solution?

In contrast to other chlorine-based technologies, mixed oxidant solution offers biofilm reduction/removal; superior disinfection efficacy; a more durable chlorine residual; reduced formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs); and improved taste and odor.

Despite 20 years of field evidence demonstrating that mixed oxidant solution (MOS) is more effective than bleach in a variety of applications, identifying the specific oxidants in addition to free chlorine in MOS has been limited by the availability of analytical techniques capable of differentiating oxidant species. Now, however, recent evidence from the research literature and from our own laboratory indicate that mixed oxidant solution may include trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and other reactive oxygen species such as strong oxidizing free radicals - hydroxyl radical, superoxide, and chlorine radicals.

For regulatory purposes, the only measurable component for both bleach and mixed oxidant solution is free available chlorine.
