MSR MIOX Purifier

In the late 1990s, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) approached MIOX to miniaturize mixed-oxidant technology for individual soldiers. The objective was to develop a water treatment system that can treat any water, anywhere, so that it is drinking water quality.

One of the first items developed was a small disinfection “pen” about the size of a magic marker. This device was ultimately developed and successfully tested against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers. Additional product input was granted by the Marine Corps System Command (MARCORSYSCOM), the Air Force Medical Evaluation Support Activity (AFMESA), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City (NSWC-PC). The device is now known as the MSR MIOX Purifier, and is used by the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Navy, Special Operations, and Homeland Security. Individual Water Purification
System (IWPS)

As a continuation of the DARPA project, several other technologies are under development to produce a comprehensive system for the treatment of any water anywhere, for conversion to drinking water quality for the individual in the field. The next stage of development is being funded by a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant from the US Marine Corps. The individual water purification system (IWPS) includes a hydration bag, a disinfection cap that screws on to the hydration bag, and a post filter. MIOX provided subcontract funding to Cascade Design, Inc. of Seattle, Washington to prepare the system for commercialization. Congress has already appropriated funding to begin outfitting the U.S. Marine Corps with a water purification system that incorporates both disinfection and filtration.
